Dozens of residents at the Susquehanna River encampment received a meal and had some summertime fun on Saturday, June 29, 2024, near the PennDOT headquarters (957-959 S Front Street; Harrisburg, PA 17104). The event was organized by the Harrisburg group, Tent Valley Ministries.
The schedule for the event:
10:30 AM – Volunteers arrive (people wanting to help are encouraged to show up)
12:00 PM – Meal distribution
The menu included: hotdogs, chicken, hamburgers, baked beans, potato salad, fruit salad, water, and juices.
The summertime activity was added to help those unable to celebrate the Independence Day holiday in the traditional way.
There were yard games and other fun activities. Nonprofit organizations were also be on hand.
“My organization has participated in several Tent Valley Ministries activities, and we will continue because it has helped us,” Sheila Johnson, founder and CEO of Socks It 2 Me, Inc., said.
Socks It 2 Me is a nonprofit that provides new quality socks, inserts, and other foot care products to people living in insecure housing, like the residents who live at the PennDOT encampment.
Tent Valley Ministries began in 2020 as a loose-knit group of women from various churches who had a mind to serve the community by providing meals and clothing. The group has had several meal giveaways in the past to commemorate Christmas, Thanksgiving, and the Independence Day holidays, to name a few.
Donations for food, sternos, and water are always being accepted.

Volunteers should have on work boots or supportive sneakers.
